Lviv region plans to spend almost €40,000 to save Ukrainian books after Russian strike on warehouses

The region plans to transfer the books it buys to libraries in the Lviv region.
The head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration also called on community heads and local council members in the region to join the initiative and allocate funds to buy Ukrainian books for municipal institutions.
"Buy Ukrainian books for your libraries, schools, and other municipal institutions. Even a small amount from each community across the region will provide significant support to book publishers," Maksym Kozytskyi wrote.

Over the past few months, Russian troops have repeatedly shelled warehouses belonging to Ukrainian book publishers.
It should be noted that on August 28, a Russian drone strike destroyed a warehouse in the Kyiv region that stored print runs for bookstore chains and publishers.
On July 19, during another Russian attack, a warehouse belonging to the Knyholav publishing house was destroyed. The publisher lost almost 250,000 books. The publishing team said the destruction of the warehouse could delay order shipments.
Another strike hit Kharkiv on August 1. A Russian attack burned down a warehouse belonging to the Ranok publishing corporation, which the Knyholand bookstore chain and other companies also used. The attack destroyed "tens of thousands of titles and millions of books."
Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said he had instructed the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance to prepare a mechanism for state support for the book publishing industry. According to him, Russian attacks destroyed 1.5 million copies of Ukrainian books in July alone, while losses amount to hundreds of millions of hryvnias.
Earlier, Rubryka reported that publishers had asked President Volodymyr Zelenskyi to convene the National Security and Defense Council and to instruct the government to develop mechanisms for compensation and the restoration of destroyed print runs. The Ukrainian Publishers Association estimates the industry's direct losses at at least UAH 1.19 billion.
