“As Long as We Are Not in NATO, We Are Not in NATO”: Zelenskyy Says Ukraine Will Not Defend Alliance Members
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine should not be expected to defend NATO member states while the country itself remains outside the Alliance.
Speaking about the security situation in Europe, Zelenskyy stressed that NATO members must fulfill their obligations to protect one another under the Alliance’s collective defense framework, UATV English reports
“As long as we are not in NATO, we are not in NATO,” Zelenskyy said.
He specifically addressed the possibility of a security threat to Estonia, noting that the country should be defended by the other NATO member states.
According to the president, Ukraine is already making a significant contribution to European security by resisting Russia’s full-scale invasion and weakening the military capabilities of the Russian armed forces. However, this does not mean that Ukraine has an obligation to provide military protection to NATO countries while it remains outside the Alliance.
Zelenskyy’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about Ukraine’s future security guarantees and its potential membership in NATO, as European countries continue to assess the risks posed by Russia to the wider region.
