Five drones cross Moldova’s border during Russia’s overnight attack on Ukraine
According to Moldova's defense ministry, the first drone that crossed the state border from Ukraine into the Republic of Moldova was detected at 03:56 a.m. near the village of Biliaivka. It moved toward the village of Palanca and, at 03:57 a.m., flew back toward Ukraine in the same direction.
The second drone was recorded at 03:59 a.m. from the direction of the Starokozache settlement, near Caplani. At 04:10 a.m., it disappeared from monitoring systems near the village of Carahasani.
The third drone crossed the state border from Ukraine into Moldova at 04:09 a.m. It moved toward the settlements of Palanca, Crocmaz, Olănești, Purcari, and Răscăieți. At 04:24 a.m., the object disappeared from radar near the settlement of Pervomaisc, close to the border area.
The fourth drone crossed the state border at 04:16 a.m. toward the settlement of Palanca. It then continued moving toward Maiaky in Ukraine.
Another drone crossed the border between the two countries at 05:50 a.m. near the "Seiț-Lisove" checkpoint. At 06:02 a.m., it moved toward the "Lisove" checkpoint and left Moldova's airspace.
Background
Overnight into August 21, Russian drones damaged the international "Tabaky" checkpoint on the border between Ukraine and Moldova. Because of the strike, pedestrian and vehicular traffic were temporarily suspended, and cars were being redirected to other checkpoints.
Russian forces also struck the international "Vynohradivka" checkpoint on the border with Moldova with a Shahed-type drone overnight on August 25. Its operations were temporarily suspended due to damage to the infrastructure.
In addition, on August 20, drone debris was found near Giurgiulești, about one kilometer from the Ukrainian border. Moldovan specialists preliminarily established that the fragments belonged to a Geran-type UAV.
Two craters were found at the site. Metal fragments were discovered inside, which may have formed after the detonation of the warhead. Parts of the engine and other drone components were found about six meters from one of the craters. The investigation is continuing to establish all the circumstances of the incident.
In addition, on August 9, a combat drone exploded in southern Moldova near the village of Crocmaz in Ștefan Vodă district. Police said this was the first time an aircraft of this type had been recorded in the country's territory.
Also, overnight into July 13, one of the Russian attack drones used to target Ukraine entered Moldova's airspace and exploded near the village of Copanca in Căușeni district. Moldova's Ministry of Defense later confirmed that it was a Russian Shahed-type, or Geran-2, attack drone. According to the ministry, it entered the country's airspace during a Russian attack on targets in the Odesa region.
