Foreign Ministry reports 55 Ukrainians missing after floods in Nepal and Tibet
According to information available as of 10:30 a.m. Kyiv time, more than 1,100 people are considered missing in the region. They include:
In particular, 55 Ukrainian citizens are missing.
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the missing Ukrainians include two Ukrainian tourist groups of 47 and seven people, as well as one Ukrainian citizen who was traveling with a foreign tourist group.
Authorities also have no contact with 85 emergency workers.
According to local authorities, at least 165 people have died in the disaster zone. As of now, there is no information about Ukrainian citizens among the dead or injured.
Search and rescue operations are continuing. Access to many disaster-hit areas remains difficult because of weather conditions. Local competent authorities are also warning of possible further floods and landslides.
Ukraine's embassies in India and China have posted safety recommendations on their official platforms. Ukrainian diplomats remain in constant contact with competent authorities and services conducting search operations, relatives of the missing, and foreign diplomats in the countries where the search is taking place. They are doing this to coordinate international efforts to find the tourist groups.
Search teams and the official authorities of the countries involved have received full information from Ukrainian diplomatic missions about all Ukrainians who currently cannot be reached. The search is ongoing.
A team from the Embassy of Ukraine in India has also traveled directly to the disaster zone. Ukraine's honorary consul in Nepal has joined the work.
Background
On the morning of August 26, flooding hit the Rasuwa district north of Nepal's capital, Kathmandu. Torrents of water and mud washed away houses, roads, and bridges, and damaged energy infrastructure.
According to preliminary findings, the disaster was caused by a collapse of ice and rock from a glacier. The flow blocked the Lhende Khola River, after which a powerful wave of water, mud, and debris surged downstream.
Transport links have been disrupted in some areas, making search-and-rescue operations more difficult. Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said the identification of the dead is still underway.
The Nepali agency also said bridges and roads had been damaged. Authorities are continuing to collect more detailed data on the disaster's consequences.
Meanwhile, rescue teams in China told state media that their main priority now is to ensure the stability of the so-called barrier lake located upstream from the disaster zone.
