Ukraine’s parliament reappoints Sybiha as foreign minister
Sybiha will therefore continue serving as head of the Foreign Ministry after a new parliamentary vote.
As Rubryka reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi submitted the candidacies of Khmara and Sybiha to the Verkhovna Rada the day before. Parliament scheduled their consideration and votes for August 19.
Zelenskyi nominated Yevhenii Khmara, a former senior official of Ukraine's Security Service who had been serving in the Defense Ministry for the past month, for the post of defense minister. Zelenskyi again nominated Andrii Sybiha as foreign minister, a position he has held since 2024. Both candidates held meetings with lawmakers from parliamentary factions and groups.
On the morning of August 19, lawmakers in the Verkhovna Rada continued meetings with the candidates for defense minister and foreign minister, Yevhenii Khmara and Andrii Sybiha. The day before, parliamentarians spoke with them for more than five hours.
Background
Andrii Sybiha was born on January 1, 1975, in Zboriv, Ternopil region. He studied at Ivan Franko Lviv State University. In 1997, he graduated with a degree in international relations and qualified as an English translator. Two years later, he earned a law degree.
Sybiha began his diplomatic career in 1997 at the Foreign Ministry. He worked as an attaché in the ministry's Treaty and Legal Department.
A significant part of his diplomatic career has been linked to Poland. From 1998 to 2002, he worked as a secretary at the Ukrainian embassy, and from 2008 to 2012, he served as minister-counselor.
Sybiha also worked in the European Integration Directorate and headed the Foreign Ministry's Consular Service Department. From 2016 to 2021, he served as Ukraine's ambassador to Türkiye.
In 2021, the diplomat moved to the Office of the President, where he became deputy head. In April 2024, Sybiha returned to the Foreign Ministry as first deputy minister. In September of the same year, he headed the foreign policy agency.
