Germany to finance the purchase of 50,000 attack drones for Ukraine

According to the agency, the contract has not previously been officially announced. At the same time, it is one of the largest drone procurement deals for Ukraine financed by a Western government.

The contract covers the supply of Shrike FPV drones manufactured by Ukrainian defense company SkyFall.

The drones are equipped with software developed by US defense technology company Auterion, which enables them to autonomously track and strike moving targets during the final stage of flight.

Auterion CEO Lorenz Meier confirmed the scale of the contract, saying it is being financed by a European country.

"Some of the drones have already been delivered to Ukraine, and the rest are expected to be sent by the end of this year," Meier said.

SkyFall confirmed Germany's involvement in financing the purchase but said it could not comment on the details of the contract.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's Ministry of Defense and Germany's Ministry of Defense declined to comment.

Shrike drones are relatively inexpensive and have been used on the battlefield since 2023.

It is also worth noting that, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Germany and the United States agreed on the first practical steps to expand production in Europe of AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM guided missiles.

The initiative is expected to help meet national, European, and global demand for the missiles while reducing delivery times. In addition to missile production programs, the countries agreed on new areas of cooperation in space and maritime security.

As Rubryka previously reported, the two sides also separately signed a letter of intent to establish a repair facility in Europe for Patriot PAC-3 air defense missiles. The new capabilities are expected to reduce maintenance and repair times and increase missile availability for partner countries.

Germany's Defense Ministry said the project would be implemented in cooperation with Lockheed Martin and European manufacturers.

In addition, it was reported that Ukraine plans to sign seven more bilateral Drone Deal agreements with NATO countries by the end of 2026. Kyiv has already signed six such agreements with countries in the Middle East, the Caucasus, and the Baltic region.
