Poland ready to help Ukraine modernize MiG-29s: what it wants in return

The minister announced progress on an agreement under which Ukraine would receive Polish MiG-29 fighter jets, while Ukraine would provide Poland with its drone technologies.

"Certainly, there are now many more good developments than there were just a few days ago," he said.

Kosiniak-Kamysz called for adherence to the principle of "reciprocity and genuine solidarity," noting that Ukraine has "significant capabilities in drone production and sells them to the Middle East."

"We are open to discussion. If Ukraine sees a need for the modernization [of MiG-29 aircraft], we can help with this as much as possible. However, the costs would have to be covered by Ukraine or by allied countries willing to do so," the minister said.

As Rubryka reported, on July 3, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha presented a package of proposals during talks in Warsaw aimed at reducing tensions in relations with Poland. The discussions covered historical issues, defense cooperation, Ukraine's reconstruction, border infrastructure development, and support for Ukrainians in Poland.

As Rubryka previously reported, Poland had been negotiating with Ukraine on the transfer of retired MiG-29 fighter jets due to the end of their operational lifespan and the lack of prospects for modernization. However, a final decision has not yet been made. At the same time, discussions are ongoing on granting Warsaw access to selected drone and missile technologies as part of mutual agreements.

In December 2025, Poland's Deputy Minister of National Defense Cezary Tomczyk said that Warsaw planned to transfer "6–8 MiG-29 aircraft" to Kyiv out of the 14 jets available in Poland. The aircraft were expected to be removed from the Polish military inventory by the end of 2025.

However, on June 17, 2026, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski said that Ukraine was not interested in receiving the MiG-29 aircraft in their current condition. According to him, Ukraine wanted the jets to meet more modern combat requirements, while the Polish side was not prepared to cover the modernization costs.

On June 30, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that Warsaw would not transfer MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine because, according to him, Kyiv had not fulfilled previous agreements on cooperation in the field of drone technologies.
