US Considering Using Iranian Assets to Compensate Gulf States for War Damage, FT Reports

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is considering plans to use Iranian assets to help finance the reconstruction of Gulf countries affected by attacks from Iran, in an effort to compensate America’s allies in the region for war-related damage, UATV English informs.

As reported by the Financial Times, a senior Trump administration official said:

“The Treasury Department will use every available tool to make Iranian assets available to our Gulf allies to support reconstruction and repair any future damage caused by Iran.”

The official added that Bessent has instructed his team to assess the situation among US allies in the Gulf and prepare comprehensive estimates of the costs associated with repairing damage caused by Iran since the beginning of the conflict.

“The Treasury Department will also examine whether Iranian assets can be used to finance reconstruction efforts,” the official said.

According to the report, relations between the United States and its key Gulf allies have become strained due to the prolonged conflict involving Iran and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for regional oil and gas exports.

The proposal to use Iranian assets — including up to $100 billion in frozen funds held in various countries abroad — emerged amid discussions between Iran and the United States over whether some of these funds should be returned to Tehran as part of a potential peace agreement.

Earlier, on June 5, US forces intercepted several ballistic missiles and drones launched by Iran toward the Strait of Hormuz and neighboring Gulf states, and carried out strikes against Iranian coastal radar installations used for surveillance.
