Ukraine's Foreign Ministry rejects claims US embassy is leaving Kyiv over Russian threats

During the briefing, Kallas answered a question about Russia's threats to strike Kyiv and Moscow's demands that diplomats leave the city.

Commenting on the work of diplomatic missions in Kyiv, the EU's top diplomat said almost all embassies continue to operate in the Ukrainian capital and called it an act of courage.

"Also yesterday, we heard from Ukraine that all embassies stayed, except one, so this also requires courage from these embassies. But yes, all European ones stayed, America left," she said on the morning of May 28.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry responded to her remarks. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi denied that the U.S. diplomatic mission had left.

Background

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the Russian army was allegedly launching "consistent systematic strikes" on Ukrainian military-industrial complex enterprises in Kyiv and "decision-making centers."

According to Moscow, "sites for the design, production, programming and preparation for the use of UAVs used by the 'Kyiv regime' with the assistance of NATO specialists" would come under attack.

In its statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry also accused Ukraine and its Western partners of allegedly violating international humanitarian law, citing the 1949 Geneva Conventions, their additional protocols, and the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also urged foreigners, including staff of diplomatic missions and international organizations, to "leave Kyiv as soon as possible." The aggressor state advised residents of the capital "not to approach military and administrative infrastructure facilities."

Russian officials claim the shelling of Kyiv will allegedly follow an attack on a college and dormitory in Starobilsk, Luhansk region, on May 22. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin said six people were killed in the attack and another 15, according to him, went missing.

In addition, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which he reported the alleged "start" of Russia's new actions. According to the propaganda outlet TASS, Lavrov told the US side that the Russian armed forces were allegedly moving to systematic strikes on facilities in Kyiv used for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

At the same time, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova said that despite Russia's threats of new massive air strikes, European Union diplomats would continue working in Kyiv.
