Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv kill one, injure others and damage buildings in two overnight attacks
Russia's first attack on the capital
At 9:41 p.m., the Ukrainian Air Force warned of a ballistic missile threat from Russia's Bryansk region. Explosions were heard in Kyiv a few minutes later.
It was subsequently reported that a strike had hit the Desnianskyi district near a metro station.
Later, Vitalii Klitschko reported that the attack had damaged a medical facility in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district. The blast wave shattered windows in the intensive care unit.
Windows were also shattered in two departments at another medical facility in the same district. According to preliminary information, no patients or medical staff were injured.
A building in a non-residential area of the Dniprovskyi district was also hit. Preliminary reports indicated that one person had been found dead near a supermarket.
The Kyiv City Military Administration reported damage to a dormitory at an educational institution in the Desnianskyi district. Klitschko уточнив that a 20-year-old woman was injured near the dormitory.
Commenting on the attack, President Zelenskyi stressed that the missiles struck crowded areas with no military facilities nearby.
"This is an attack directly on the city, on its infrastructure," the president said.
He also noted that Russia continues to attack Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities and communities with Shahed-type attack drones.
"Artificial delays in air defense supplies to Ukraine help terror," Zelenskyi said.
Following the second attack, Vitalii Klitschko reported strikes in several districts of the city.
"In the Podilskyi district, a strike hit an administrative building. Two other locations were hit, both involving non-residential buildings," the mayor said.
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Russian forces struck the grounds of an educational institution in the Desnianskyi district. The attack damaged buildings belonging to a university campus, dormitories and nearby residential buildings.
A passenger car near a metro station was also hit.
According to rescuers, at least 10 people were reported injured at several locations.
In the Dniprovskyi district, the second attack partially destroyed a three-storey non-residential building, from the roof down to the basement. The body of one person killed in the attack was found there.
Klitschko also reported overnight that Russian forces had struck the Pivdennyi Bridge, damaging metro infrastructure. The bridge closure led to changes in traffic arrangements, with 15 buses operating on temporary route No. 1-M.
Traffic resumed several hours later. Klitschko said all stations on the red metro line had reopened to passengers, with trains running between Akademmistechko and Lisova stations. However, the Russian attack damaged infrastructure between Darnytsia and Chernihivska stations, as well as the exits from Lisova station.
Train services on the green metro line between Osokorky and Chervonyi Khutir stations remain suspended.
The mayor also reported that 14 people were injured in the attacks, nine of whom were hospitalized. The National Police уточнила that the woman killed was 46 years old.
Rubryka photojournalist Mykola Tymchenko visited the sites of the strikes.
Earlier, Rubryka reported that traffic on the Pivdennyi Bridge in the direction of Kyiv's left bank would be restricted for several days. Due to road surface repairs, vehicles will be able to use only the first lane. The restrictions will be in effect from the morning of October 27 until the evening of November 1.
