Ukraine Completes Its Work on Freyja Anti-Ballistic Defense Project, Zelenskyy Says
Ukraine has completed its assigned work on the international Freyja project to develop an anti-ballistic defense system, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on October 17. The project’s partner countries are continuing their work, while Kyiv is seeking to begin testing the first system as soon as possible, UATV English reports.
Speaking to journalists, Zelenskyy said 10 countries are involved in the project and that Ukraine has fulfilled its commitments. Further progress now depends on the work of its international partners.
The president said he had discussed the project in detail with French President Emmanuel Macron. Germany, Denmark and Norway are also playing important roles in its development. Zelenskyy plans to hold further talks with Norwegian representatives next week, given Norway’s involvement in the initiative.
Zelenskyy stressed that developing an indigenous anti-ballistic system is a complex technological challenge that typically takes years of work. However, Ukraine is trying to accelerate the process because of the ongoing threat of Russian attacks.
“People work on systems like these for decades. We want to move very quickly because there is no time — that is the truth. Unfortunately, we face this kind of enemy, and we are working to make this project succeed,” Zelenskyy said.
The president emphasized the need for closer cooperation with international partners to speed up development and bring the first Freyja system to testing. He did not provide a timeline for the tests.
