Ukrainian children's book authors nominated for 2027 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award

The award's official website published the list of nominees:

Romana Romanyshyn and Andrii Lesiv founded Studio Agrafka. Among its renowned titles are "Stars and Poppy Seeds," "The War That Changed Rondo," and "Loudly, Softly, in a Whisper." The studio's works have repeatedly earned prestigious international accolades, including the BolognaRagazzi Award.

Vladyslav Yerko is widely known for his illustrations for Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen," "Tales of Foggy Albion," and the Ukrainian editions of the Harry Potter book series.

His illustrations for "The Snow Queen" won the Grand Prix at the Ukrainian "Book of the Year 2000" competition. In 2006, the edition received the "Best Children's Book" award from the Anderson Foundation in the US. Publishers released the book featuring Yerko's artwork in numerous countries worldwide, including the UK, South Korea, and Australia.

In 2004, his illustrated edition of "Tales of Foggy Albion" won the "Book of the Year 2003" competition, and in 2008, his design for "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark" received the Grand Prix at the Lviv Book Forum. Yerko also created illustrations for Paulo Coelho's works.

Halyna Malyk authored children's books, including "The Unusual Adventures of Ala in Nedoladiia," "Criminals from a Parallel World," and "Uncle Yoy and Lyshynia."

In 1988, Malyk received the Oleksandr Kopylenko Prize for her novella "The Unusual Adventures of Ala in Nedoladiia." In 2003, she won the Lesia Ukrainka Literary Prize for "Criminals from a Parallel World."

In 2007, she earned the Fedir Potushniak Award for her books "Adventures in the Enchanted City" and "Forbidden to Laugh." Malyk also writes children's poetry; her 2015 collection "December Rides a Horse" placed second in the national "Book of the Year 2015" ranking.

Background

The Swedish government established the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2002. The award honors annual achievements in children's and young adult literature and in promoting reading among youth. The winner receives 5 million Swedish kronor, with a 12-member jury determining the laureate.

It should be noted that Ukraine established a new annual state literary prize called "Volia" (Freedom). It will recognize not only the best Ukrainian prose and non-fiction, but also books by foreign authors about Ukraine that have been translated into Ukrainian.

Additionally, two Ukrainian books—Serhii Zhadan's "Arabesques" and Yuliia Iliukha's "My Women"—were longlisted for the Angelus Central European Literary Award.
