United to win: Latvian PM calls on Europe to sacrifice part of comfort to help Ukraine

Kulbergs remains convinced that a strong Ukraine means a strong Europe, while its weakening will create serious problems for the entire region.

The prime minister urged Europeans to weigh the costs of helping Ukraine against its significance for collective security. He believes European countries should review their priorities and prepare to make certain concessions to achieve this.

He also explained that the financial contribution to support Ukraine is comparable to giving up one beer per European. In his view, such expenses remain entirely manageable, especially considering that human lives depend on them.

Kulbergs stressed that Europe can afford to continue funding aid for Ukraine.

EU leaders will meet at a summit in Brussels on October 15–16 to focus on economic challenges, including energy prices, according to the European Council. The media outlet dpa reports that President Volodymyr Zelenskyi will participate in the summit in person.

Background

Earlier, Rubryka reported that the Latvian government plans to sharply increase duties on the transit and processing of grain from Russia and Belarus. Riga also aims to verify the origin of grain shipments to prevent the circulation of products that may have been unlawfully taken from Ukraine's occupied territories.

On September 25, the Saeima of Latvia urgently introduced border controls for grain cargoes from third countries. The amendments aim to prevent the transport of illegally obtained goods, including grain, through Latvian territory from the occupied areas of Ukraine.

It should be noted that Latvia will maintain security support for Ukraine at a level of at least 0.25% of GDP annually. Ukraine also counts on Latvia's leadership in working with other countries and international formats to secure additional assistance for Ukrainian soldiers.
