EU prepares roadmaps for Ukraine and three candidate countries, with Ukrainian plan set to differ
According to her, the EU aims to help these candidate countries maintain reform momentum, with the roadmaps outlining subsequent steps. Specifically, they will include indicative timelines and concrete tasks to be completed.
"This will provide us with greater predictability regarding accession. Importantly, this path will continue to rely on the individual merits of the candidate countries," the EU Commissioner noted.
At the same time, Kos observed that the situation in Ukraine differs significantly from the other three countries due to the war. She added that work on the Ukrainian roadmap remains ongoing and "will be somewhat different."
"The closer we get to concluding the accession process or the more steps we take within technical negotiations — such as opening clusters, reaching benchmarks, and eventually closing chapters — the easier it will be to determine exactly how the entire situation [the war] will reflect in the terms of the accession treaty and what it will look like. I hope the war in Ukraine ends soon. I truly wish for that," Kos remarked.
