Ukraine and Romania strengthen transport links: memorandum on border infrastructure development signed
The memorandum is based on an updated strategy for developing cross-border infrastructure between the two countries, taking into account new needs and challenges related to the transportation of goods and passengers.
The memorandum outlines further joint steps by Ukraine and Romania to develop transport routes between the countries. These include modernizing and developing road border crossing points and access roads, strengthening rail connections, simplifying border control procedures, and expanding opportunities for transshipment of Ukrainian goods at Romanian ports.
Another area of cooperation is the development of shared cross-border infrastructure. Ukraine and Romania plan to increase the capacity of existing border crossing points and develop new connections. The updated joint strategy covers 17 border crossing points, 10 of which are new proposals.
"The Romanian route is extremely important for Ukrainian logistics amid the full-scale war. Our task now is to systematically develop the entire transport corridor: border crossing points, access roads, railways, and port infrastructure. The signed memorandum defines specific areas of this work. It is important for us to increase border capacity and create stable and predictable routes for Ukrainian businesses to the European Union and Romanian ports," Mykola Kalashnyk said.
The next step will be to begin implementing the infrastructure projects outlined in the memorandum and secure funding for their implementation. Ukraine and Romania will continue coordinating efforts to develop infrastructure on both sides of the border, increase its capacity, and strengthen transport connections between Ukraine and the European Union.
