From Space to Strike in 15 Minutes: Ukraine’s New Way of War
Ukrainian drone units have turned civilian space imagery into an effective instrument for precision strikes
Just a few years ago, satellite reconnaissance largely belonged to major powers and passed through several layers of intelligence analysis before reaching the battlefield. In 2026, that chain has been compressed to minutes.
Ukrainian drone operators can now receive commercial satellite imagery directly at the frontline, use it to identify targets and plan routes, and launch strike drones without waiting for the traditional intelligence chain.
Vantor, formerly known as Maxar Intelligence, operates a constellation of 10 satellites, including six WorldView Legion spacecraft. Their imagery can reach resolutions of up to 30 centimeters, with software enhancement providing even greater detail.
The satellites can revisit some locations 12–15 times a day, allowing Ukrainian units to compare images and identify changes that may reveal concealed equipment or new activity.
It was this frequency that changed battlefield tactics. Previously, a drone operator often flew “blind.” Now a unit can observe an object from orbit for several days and only then launch a strike drone.
One documented case involved Ukrainian troops detecting suspicious signals from a building hidden beneath trees. Satellite imagery revealed armored vehicles that reconnaissance drones could not see through the foliage. After several days of observation, the site was identified as an operations center and destroyed.
The approach was also used during Operation Starfall II, in which satellite imagery helped identify Russian military infrastructure, including an ammunition depot. Technology partners say the system has reduced the time from target detection to engagement by up to 90%.
The most important change is not the satellite itself, but the delivery of its information to the frontline. Vantor, Dutch company Bravo1Alpha, Persistent Systems, and Ukrainian company Burevii have developed a system capable of sending commercial satellite imagery to a soldier’s device in as little as 15 minutes.
The new arrangement is more like a messaging app: the data bypasses centralized review and lands on ATAK, a tablet, or a laptop directly at the frontline position.
The system allows operators to compare current and previous images, search for targets, and plan drone routes. Vantor’s WorldView 3D service can also create three-dimensional terrain models to support navigation when GPS is unavailable.
The result is a shorter “kill chain” — the process from identifying a target to destroying it — while reducing the need to expose expensive reconnaissance drones to Russian air defenses and electronic warfare.
Commercial satellite imagery is increasingly supported by European governments. Planet Labs operates more than 600 Earth-observation satellites, while Germany signed a €240 million multi-year agreement for satellite services covering European security needs.
Germany has also supported Ukraine’s access to high-resolution radar imagery through Rheinmetall and Finland’s ICEYE. Unlike optical satellites, synthetic-aperture radar can operate through clouds and at night.
The different data streams are integrated through Ukraine’s DELTA battle management system, which combines satellite imagery, drone reconnaissance and 3D terrain information into a common operational picture.
“Almost real time” does not mean instantaneous. Fifteen minutes — and sometimes several hours — remains far slower than the live video feed of an FPV drone. Optical satellites can also be limited by clouds and darkness, making radar imagery essential.
There is also a political vulnerability. In March 2025, after the U.S. administration suspended intelligence sharing with Ukraine, Maxar temporarily cut Ukrainian users’ access to its satellite imagery service before restoring it.
A single administrative step in Washington can effectively blind military units thousands of kilometers away — which is precisely why relying on multiple commercial providers has become part of Ukrainian resilience.
Ukraine is therefore diversifying across several providers, combining optical and radar imagery, and maintaining its own software layer for processing and integrating the data.
The broader shift is that space-based intelligence is no longer the exclusive domain of great powers. Commercial satellites can provide high-resolution information to medium-sized countries and, crucially, deliver it directly to tactical units.
The same class of satellites used to monitor illegal fishing or update maps now feeds data directly into tactical strike operations.
The battlefield advantage is increasingly determined not only by who owns the most sophisticated satellites, but by who can turn satellite data into a decision fastest.
At the same time, this creates new vulnerabilities: commercial providers, contracts, export controls and political decisions can all affect access to space-based intelligence.
Ukraine’s experience in 2026 offers a concrete formula: frequent imagery, a short path from satellite to pilot, and a drone capable of immediate engagement.
The result is a new model of warfare in which strategic intelligence can reach the tactical level in minutes — and Ukraine is among the countries pushing that model forward.
