At least 27 killed, 42 injured: search for people continues in Myla, Kyiv region, after blast
According to him, rescue operations at the site are still underway, so the final number of victims is currently unknown.
Among those killed was Taras Didych, head of the Dmytrivska community. Following the attack, he was among the first to go to the scene to help people, but was killed in the detonation.
Forty-two people sustained injuries of varying severity, including four children. Seven people were hospitalized.
A total of 381 people, including 59 children, were evacuated from the emergency site.
Emergency rescue and firefighting operations are ongoing at the site. Rescuers are also dismantling structures and searching for people.
According to preliminary data, around 50 residential buildings were damaged in the attack.
An emergency response center has been set up in Dmytrivka to handle requests from local residents. Hot meals and psychological support are also available there.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyi reacted to the tragedy. He said that efforts to deal with the aftermath of the Russian drone strike in the village of Myla had been ongoing since the evening. According to him, all necessary services have been involved in the response.
"There was a strike on a warehouse, followed by a detonation. Unfortunately, there is significant damage to the surrounding infrastructure: residential buildings, a boarding facility for elderly people and people with disabilities have been damaged," Zelenskyi said.
According to him, the evacuation is ongoing. The President said that, at the time of his statement, 27 deaths had been confirmed:
"One of those killed was Taras Didych, head of the Dmytrivska community. He was helping to save people. My condolences to his family and loved ones."
Zelenskyi also said he had received reports from Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi and Minister of Internal Affairs Ivan Vihivskyi. The President separately stressed the need to hold those responsible for what happened accountable.
"Those who allowed this to happen must be held accountable for their decisions," Zelenskyi said.
According to him, investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are conducting a pre-trial investigation. Criminal proceedings have been opened under the article on official negligence.
The President stressed that regulations prohibit the storage of ammunition near residential buildings and other residential areas.
"There are regulations: ammunition cannot be stored near houses or other residential areas. There will certainly be appropriate conclusions," Zelenskyi said.
What is known about the Russian attack on Kyiv region
As reported, at around 8:10 p.m. on August 28, a drone fell or struck the premises of an enterprise in the village of Myla, Bucha district, during a Russian attack. A large-scale fire broke out, followed by a series of detonations.
Due to emergency response operations and the evacuation of residents, the Kyiv–Chop highway was temporarily closed between the 15th and 32nd kilometers.
As a result of the attack, a private residential house was destroyed in Bucha district. Seven more houses were damaged. A fire truck and a boarding facility for elderly people were also damaged.
The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed that there were fatalities as a result of the attack, but did not provide a number. In addition, six people were reported injured. More than 200 people, including children, were evacuated from the village of Myla overnight.
Rescuers, police officers, medics, and other emergency services were working at the scene. Meanwhile, Russian forces continued attacking the Kyiv region with strike drones.
Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi also commented on the situation. He said that "the tragedy in Vyshneve was not a lesson" and called on law enforcement agencies to respond with "immediate and strict action."
Law enforcement officers have now launched a pre-trial investigation into possible official negligence under Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigation will examine the legality of the placement and storage of explosive items and materials on the enterprise's premises, whether the relevant permits were in place, and the actions of the officials involved.
As reported, Russian forces attacked the Kyiv region 38 times on the morning of August 28 according to the regional authorities, killing one person and injuring two others. A total of 49 civilian sites were damaged in the region.
Overall, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with seven S8000 BanderoL cruise missiles and 96 strike drones on August 28, more than 70 of which were jet-powered. The enemy directed most of the drones toward Kyiv.
