Gold in Birmingham: Mahuchikh wins European high jump title for the third consecutive time
Mahuchikh and Herashchenko reached the final after a flawless qualifying round. Another Ukrainian, Yuliia Levchenko, also qualified for the European Championships but was unable to compete due to injury.
Mahuchikh began the final at 1.92 m, when 11 of the 15 athletes remained in the competition. The Ukrainian cleared the bar comfortably on her first attempt. Herashchenko started at 1.83 m. She then cleared 1.88 m on her second attempt, while she needed a third attempt to clear 1.92 m.
The next height, 1.95 m, proved more difficult for both Ukrainians. Mahuchikh cleared it on her second attempt, while Herashchenko failed to clear the bar and ended her competition.
The fight for gold continued at 1.97 m. Before this attempt, Poland's Maria Żodzik was leading, while Montenegro's Marija Vuković was in third place. Both rivals failed to clear the bar three times, while Mahuchikh cleared it flawlessly on her first attempt and moved into first place.
With the gold already secured, the Ukrainian called for the bar to be raised to 2.01 m. However, all three attempts were unsuccessful, so Mahuchikh finished the final with a result of 1.97 m.
For Herashchenko, her 1.92 m result earned her fifth place.
At the previous European Championships in 2024, both Ukrainians also won medals: Mahuchikh took gold, while Herashchenko won bronze.
It is worth recalling that Olympic champion and world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh competed at the Ukrainian Athletics Championships for the first time in five years. In Lviv, she confidently won gold and also cleared 2.00 metres for the first time this summer.
