Ukraine's Security Service finds new evidence Russia uses depleted uranium munitions: radiation exceeds limit 80-fold
According to the investigation, Russian forces use radioactive elements in R-60M missiles that have been adapted for use on strike drones.
During inspections of Russian drone impact sites and radiological examinations of their warheads, an investigative team from Ukraine's Security Service, together with specialists from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, recorded radiation levels 80 times higher than the natural background level.
In addition, the gamma radiation level of some fragments of enemy drones ranged from 8.3 to 24 microsieverts per hour, while the permitted sanitary norm is 0.3 microsieverts per hour. Ukraine's Security Service said such radiation levels pose a direct threat to human health and the environment.
Dosimetric equipment and a mobile automated radiological system confirmed the presence of radioactive components.
After detecting and examining the dangerous munitions, specialists implemented a series of measures to neutralize them and protect the population.
Investigators from Ukraine's Security Service opened criminal proceedings under Article 438 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, "War crimes".
Ukraine's Security Service also urged citizens to exercise particular caution if they find fragments of drones, missiles, or other munitions. The agency stressed that people must not approach, touch, or move such objects.

Ukraine's Security Service also recalled that in April this year, counterintelligence officers had already exposed Russia's use of radioactive munitions in the Chernihiv region.
It was also reported that counterintelligence officers and investigators from Ukraine's Security Service documented two new cases in which Russia used munitions containing depleted uranium elements against Ukraine. Dangerous components were found in Geran-2 strike UAVs, which Russian forces used to attack the Sumy region twice in April 2026.
