Ukrainian Railways secures nearly $18 million in international funding for infrastructure protection and modernization
According to Kuleba, the funding will strengthen the resilience of Ukraine's railway system during the war and support its further integration into the European transport network.
The largest support package includes $10 million in additional grant funding under the RELINC project, implemented with the support of the World Bank and the Ukraine Relief, Recovery, Reconstruction and Reform Trust Fund (URTF).
"The funds will be used to protect critical railway infrastructure, which operates daily under the threat of Russian attacks while ensuring uninterrupted passenger transportation, evacuation services, and humanitarian rail operations," Kuleba said.
Ukraine is also securing nearly €6 million in grant funding jointly with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. under the Interreg NEXT Poland–Ukraine 2021-2027 program.
"The project envisages the modernization of infrastructure on Line No. 101 in Werchrata and the reconstruction of the railway station in Lviv to create a fully accessible space with new platforms, elevators, escalators, and modern infrastructure for passengers with reduced mobility," the Deputy Prime Minister explained.
Another key initiative will focus on preparations for implementing the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
For this purpose, Ukraine is partnering with Swedfund International AB to secure around €1 million in grant funding to develop a feasibility study and a roadmap for implementing the system.
According to Kuleba, the introduction of ERTMS is one of the key steps toward integrating Ukraine's railway network into the European Union's unified transport system.
"Ukraine's railway remains the backbone of the country's logistical resilience. I am grateful to our international partners for their trust and support of these strategic projects," he said.
As Rubryka previously reported, agreements were finalized at URC 2026 in Gdańsk to establish the Ukraine Transport Support Fund. One of its main objectives is to restore transport infrastructure and accelerate Ukraine's integration into the EU transport network.
Rubryka also reported that Ukrzaliznytsia has installed air conditioning in regional electric trains for the first time. The upgraded trains are already operating on two routes, while the company is completing the modernization of another electric train.
