Zelenskyi unveils first step toward European anti-ballistic defense system
Ukraine first proposed creating a European anti-ballistic missile defense system.
Zelenskyi also noted that Ukraine's allies have prepared new aid packages ahead of the next meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, better known as the Ramstein format.
On June 17, German defense company Hensoldt and Ukrainian company Fire Point signed a memorandum of understanding on the FREYJA ground-based air defense system. The system is designed to detect and intercept ballistic missiles.
Earlier, German defense manufacturer Diehl Defence announced that it was in talks with Ukrainian weapons producer Fire Point about the possible joint production of Flamingo cruise missiles in Germany.
What we know about missile production in Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously said that Ukraine's Flamingo missile would soon enter mass production. On August 18, footage showing the missile being used in combat, including strikes against targets inside Russia, emerged online.
Fire Point, the company behind the Flamingo cruise missile, has also announced the development of its own FP-7 and FP-9 ballistic missiles, as well as air defense systems.
Ukraine is developing the FP-7 and FP-9 ballistic missiles as a potentially lower-cost alternative to the US-made ATACMS system, with a range of up to 800 kilometers.
In early October 2025, President Zelenskyi also confirmed the successful combined use of Neptune and Flamingo missiles in combat operations.
