Germany to fund air defense ammunition and Patriot missiles for Ukraine
Germany will allocate 200 million US dollars to purchase critical ammunition for Ukraine's air defense systems.
The minister also announced Germany's participation in the Jumpstart program, which funds the procurement of missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
Pistorius added that Berlin is urging other members of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group to help finance the purchase of PAC-3 missiles to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses.
Earlier, leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) pledged to increase deliveries of air defense systems, interceptor missiles, and long-range weapons to Ukraine. They also signaled they are open to licensing weapons production in Ukraine.
On April 14, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced new military aid packages for Ukraine. Berlin will fund several hundred Patriot missiles, giving a major boost to the defense of Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. The package also includes 36 IRIS-T launchers, strengthening Ukraine's multi-layered air defenses.
Patriot systems and their missiles are currently among the most sought-after air defense assets in the world because of their proven effectiveness against Russian ballistic missile attacks.
Ukraine and Germany are also working to accelerate deliveries of air defense ammunition.
According to media reports, Kyiv has asked Berlin to provide additional Patriot interceptor missiles from German stockpiles to bolster Ukraine's air defenses.
Ukraine and Germany will also develop the FREYJA missile defense system, designed to detect and intercept ballistic missiles.
