Sweden allocates US$108m for US weapons purchases for Ukraine

Sweden is allocating US$108 million to support the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) programme, an initiative under which European NATO allies purchase American weapons for Ukraine.

The funds are part of a previously announced aid package for Ukraine, Swedish Defence Ministry underlined.

Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson stressed that thanks to PURL, Ukraine can quickly gain access to crucial US defence equipment, including modern air defence systems and ammunition.

"It is crucial for Ukraine to be able to defend itself against further Russian attacks. Sweden's support is long-term, comprehensive and based on Ukraine's needs," Jonson emphasised.

This is the fourth time Sweden has allocated funds under the PURL framework. With the new contribution, Sweden's total support through PURL amounts to US$543 million.

Sweden's announcement came on the day of a meeting of NATO defence ministers, on the sidelines of which Germany announced that it would allocate a further US$400 million for Ukraine's air defence and Patriot missiles under PURL and the Jumpstart programme.

Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken has outlined plans to supply F-16 fighter jets to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
