Ukraine Gradually Seizing Battlefield Initiative as Russian Offensive Falters
Ukrainian forces are increasingly shifting the balance on the battlefield in their favor, combining flexible defense, advanced technologies, and targeted strikes on Russian rear positions, military spokesperson Serhii Bratchuk said.
According to Ukrinform, Bratchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Volunteer Army “South,” noted that Russia has failed to achieve its objectives during the widely anticipated spring offensive and continues to suffer heavy losses, UATV English informs.
“Our flexible defense, high-quality personnel training, counteroffensive actions, and modern technologies have not only matched Russia’s advances but in some areas have allowed us to reclaim Ukrainian territory,” Bratchuk said.
He emphasized that Ukraine is actively integrating new technologies into warfare, including drones and ground-based robotic systems, expanding capabilities both in the air and on land.
While specific details remain undisclosed for security reasons, Bratchuk said successful combat operations are ongoing across multiple sectors.
He also highlighted developments in the Black Sea, where Ukraine is gaining the upper hand.
“The battle continues, but Ukraine is winning engagements and pushing the enemy out of maritime areas,” he said.
Bratchuk pointed to the development of guided aerial bombs, which he said could significantly influence the battlefield in the near future.
Modern warfare, he added, no longer involves fixed front lines but instead features a fluid and flexible line of contact.
“We are creating ‘grey’ and ‘dead’ zones for the enemy and planning operations where the adversary faces defensive challenges,” he said.
Strikes deep inside Russian territory are also disrupting logistics and supply chains, making it increasingly difficult for Russian forces to sustain operations along an extended front line.
Commenting on Russian claims about a potential summer offensive, Bratchuk said such statements reflect the failure of earlier campaigns.
“The spring offensive phase has failed. The Russians did not achieve operational or tactical objectives,” he said.
He added that Russian losses remain significant, with an estimated 30,000 to 34,000 personnel lost per month, exceeding the country’s ability to replenish its forces.
According to Bratchuk, Ukraine’s current approach is creating real conditions for seizing the strategic initiative.
“All Ukrainian actions today are strategic — from frontline operations to strikes deep inside Russian territory,” he said.
