Germany allocates €1.3 billion in aid to Ukraine: part of the funds will go to energy and Shahed interceptors
"There is a new comprehensive support package for Ukraine, more than €1.3 billion. It is weapons that will help right now, support for our energy sector, and it is a very important energy package ahead of winter," Zelenskyi said.
According to him, part of the funds under the new package will go toward producing new interceptors against jet-powered Shaheds.
Separately, Chancellor Merz said that ahead of winter, Germany will provide Ukraine with about €350 million in aid for the energy sector. The funds will be directed, among other things, to:
"Ahead of winter, we are providing assistance for the energy sector in the amount of about €350 million. For generators, for substations, and for necessary repair work," Merz said.
According to the chancellor, this aid is meant to mitigate the consequences of Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and help the population get through the coming winter.
Merz noted that Ukraine may face a very difficult winter, as Russia continues to strike energy infrastructure.
"We are facing a possibly very difficult winter. Moscow is shelling not only this city and other large cities, but is also deliberately targeting energy supply infrastructure: thermal power plants, substations, gas stations, railway infrastructure," the chancellor said.
He expressed his conviction that the Russian attacks are also aimed at putting pressure on the Ukrainian population.
"The goal is perfectly clear: to break the morale of Ukrainians," Merz said.
At the same time, the chancellor said that during his current stay in Kyiv he sees the opposite picture. According to him, despite the Russian attack that took place this morning, Ukrainians and the government are showing determination.
"Despite the attack that took place this morning, I see a determined people and a determined government here," the head of the German government emphasized.
Zelenskyi also stressed that the new support package is only part of broad cooperation between Ukraine and Germany. In total, the parties concluded 15 agreements and documents on security cooperation. These concern, among other things:
According to the president, the total "weight" of these agreements exceeds €8.5 billion.
The head of state also reminded that this year the German government has already allocated €11.5 billion in support of Ukraine.
Separately, Zelenskyi thanked Merz for visiting Kyiv amid escalating Russian attacks.
"In recent days, Russia has been openly trying to intimidate European, American, and other partners of ours with direct threats, constant alerts, and shelling, so that partners would not be here in the capital, would not be in Ukraine. But I am very grateful once again that the visit is taking place, that the German embassy continues its work in Ukraine, and that the full range of our cooperation with Germany, our strategic partnership, remains in place," Zelenskyi noted.
As previously reported by Rubryka, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit. He leads a broader German delegation that also includes representatives of the defense and energy sectors.
Also, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová stated that all EU member states' embassies are staying in Kyiv, and that Russia should not test the Vienna Convention's strength.
