Russian Economy Faces Risk Of Collapse — US Intelligence

Russia risks repeating the economic scenario of the USSR’s collapse if it continues its war against Ukraine, while at the front Moscow can no longer achieve a decisive turning point. US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe warned Russian leadership of this during his visit to Moscow in late August, German outlet Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) writes, UATV English relays.

According to the outlet, Ratcliffe conveyed to Moscow American intelligence’s assessment of Russia’s actual condition. Western partners learned about the content of his briefing from US intelligence materials.

This concerns not just the situation in Donbas or Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian territory. Militarily, according to the American assessment, the conflict has reached a stalemate. But the main threat to Moscow is tied to the economy: if Russia continues the war, its economy could collapse following the scenario of the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War.

Ratcliffe’s message, according to FAZ, was that further escalation would only worsen Russia’s position. Washington, meanwhile, does not plan to abandon its support for Ukraine. Moscow was made to understand that instead of trying to achieve military superiority, it should move toward negotiations.

It was previously reported that Ratcliffe’s visit to Moscow may have been linked to a warning to the Kremlin about the unacceptability of expanding the war to NATO countries. However, according to FAZ’s source, the main purpose of the trip was specifically to convey US intelligence’s assessment of Russia’s military and economic condition.

It should be recalled that Russian authorities plan to raise taxes again for citizens and businesses in order to increase federal budget revenues. A significant portion of this money goes toward Russia’s war against Ukraine.
