Discover Europe’s most popular castles and palaces in 2026, from Prague Castle and Schönbrunn to Buda Castle and historic landmarks across the continent
European castles and palaces remain among the top destinations for cultural travel. The
TUI Musement ranking includes 30 historic landmarks that received the highest number of tourist reviews on Google.
The study compares data from July 2026 with figures from 2023. The ranking includes former royal residences, medieval fortresses, palace complexes and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Prague Castle took first place for the second year in a row. In July 2026, it had more than 199,000 reviews — 31% more than three years earlier. Buckingham Palace in London came second, while Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace ranked third with more than 182,000 reviews.
The popularity of cultural and historical landmarks continues to grow. According to research commissioned by TUI Musement, 94% of respondents are interested or very interested in history, culture and heritage experiences during their next city break.

Prague Castle in Czech Republic topped the ranking with more than 199,000 Google reviews. It is one of the largest palace complexes in the world and includes St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and the picturesque Golden Lane.
Prague Castle is worth visiting because a single walk through the complex reveals landmarks from different historical periods and offers an insight into the history of Czech kings and presidents.
Buckingham Palace in London, the United Kingdom, retained second place in the ranking. It is the official London residence of the British monarch, while the Changing of the Guard attracts thousands of visitors every year.
During the summer season, visitors can enter the palace’s State Rooms. Buckingham Palace is worth visiting for its combination of royal tradition, architecture and one of London’s best-known ceremonies.
Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace in Austria rose to third place, overtaking last year’s competitors. The palace has more than 182,000 reviews — 41% more than in 2023. This year, the landmark also marks 30 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The interiors of Schönbrunn tell the story of Empress Maria Theresa, Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph I. It is worth visiting for the imperial rooms, extensive park and atmosphere of the former Austrian monarchy.
The Palace of Versailles in France took fourth place. It was once the residence of the French kings. The Hall of Mirrors, royal apartments and vast gardens demonstrate the splendour of court life.
Versailles is worth including in your itinerary to explore a place connected with the history of absolutism, the reign of Louis XIV and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles after the First World War.

Wawel Castle in Krakow, Poland, dropped two places but remained among Europe’s five most popular landmarks. Polish kings once lived here, and the country’s monarchs were crowned at the castle.
The castle stands above the Dragon’s Den, one of Krakow’s best-known symbols. Wawel is worth visiting to explore Poland’s royal history and admire views over the city.
The Alhambra in Granada, Spain, retained sixth place. The complex of palaces, gardens and fortifications first served as a residence for the Nasrid sultans and later became associated with the kings of Castile.
The best-known parts of the Alhambra include the Nasrid Palaces, the Generalife gardens, the Alcazaba fortress and the Palace of Charles V. The landmark is worth visiting to see how Arab and European cultures blend in the architecture of Andalusia.
The Royal Palace of Madrid moved up one position after the number of Google reviews increased by 47%. The complex covers more than 135,000 square metres and is still used for official receptions and ceremonies of the Spanish royal family.
Visitors can see the Throne Room, the Gasparini Room and the Royal Chapel. The palace is worth visiting to appreciate the scale of Spain’s royal heritage in the heart of the capital.
The Tower of London ranked eighth. Its walls witnessed events that changed the course of British history, including the execution of Anne Boleyn and the disappearance of Edward V and his brother, the Duke of York.
Today, the Tower houses the Crown Jewels and preserves the traditions of the Yeoman Warders and the ravens, which are considered the fortress’s guardians. It is worth visiting for its combination of medieval architecture, royal treasures and dramatic history.
Neuschwanstein Castle in the Bavarian Alps, Germany, rose to ninth place and has more than 114,000 reviews. The fairy-tale palace is associated with King Ludwig II of Bavaria and his fascination with art, architecture and medieval legends.
The silhouette of Neuschwanstein is widely believed to have inspired the castle of Sleeping Beauty. The landmark is worth visiting for its panoramic views, unusual architecture and romantic atmosphere.
Bran Castle in Transylvania, Romania, completed the top 10. In popular culture, it is known as Dracula’s Castle, although the historical Vlad the Impaler, who inspired Bram Stoker’s character, never lived there.
Despite the vampire legend, Bran has a rich history of its own, evolving from a border fortress into a royal residence. It is worth visiting to combine an interest in Romanian history with mountain scenery and the atmosphere of Transylvanian legends.

The full TUI Musement ranking includes castles and palaces from countries across Europe. Spain has the strongest representation with six landmarks, followed by the United Kingdom with four, while Italy and Portugal each have three. Other entries include Edinburgh Castle, the Teutonic Order’s Malbork Castle, Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Peñíscola Castle, Montjuïc Castle, Hohenzollern Castle, Heidelberg Castle and Lichtenstein Castle, as well as Pena Palace, the Doge’s Palace, Queluz Palace and the Royal Alcázar of Seville. These landmarks are known for medieval and Renaissance architecture, royal history, museum collections, fortifications and panoramic views.
Buda Castle in Budapest was the only new entry in the top 30, taking 23rd place after a 65% increase in Google reviews over three years. The list also includes Belmonte Castle and Coca Castle in Spain, Fénis Castle and Este Castle in Italy, and Château de Loches in France. Together, they represent different periods of European history, from knights’ fortresses and royal residences to museum complexes preserving art, weapons, frescoes and objects connected with court life.
Buda Castle was the only new addition to the top 30. Its number of reviews increased by 65% over three years, allowing the landmark to debut in 23rd place.
Among the biggest climbers were Schönbrunn Palace, Neuschwanstein Castle and Malbork Castle. Each improved its position by two places.
Montjuïc Castle in Barcelona recorded the steepest drop, falling six places. Edinburgh Castle, Peñíscola Castle and Heidelberg Castle each moved down by three places.
TUI Musement created the ranking based on the number of Google reviews recorded in July 2026. The data was compared with figures from July 2023 to measure how the popularity of the landmarks had changed over three years.
