Ten-year-old Ukrainian gymnast Oleksandra Paskal performs in Times Square to remind world of children in war
There, they spoke about her recovery after a severe injury and stressed the need for peace for Ukrainian children.
Oleksandra has practiced rhythmic gymnastics since early childhood. In 2022, she was injured in a Russian missile strike. The girl was trapped under the rubble, where a concrete slab crushed the bones in her leg.
She spent more than two weeks in intensive care. She had an open arm fracture, four broken ribs, a head injury, and multiple shrapnel wounds.
After 15 days in a medically induced coma, doctors had to amputate her limb.
After several months of rehabilitation, Oleksandra returned to sports. Today, she performs dance and acrobatic routines using a modern leg prosthesis. Over the past four years, the young athlete has competed alongside children without disabilities and has already won medals at several tournaments.
In 2023, then-seven-year-old Oleksandra Paskal, who lost her leg during a Russian missile strike on the Odesa region, took part in her first competition.
In 2024, the young athlete Oleksandra Paskal also competed in a tournament organized by Anna Rizatdinova, the bronze medalist of the 2016 Olympics.
The gymnast's mother, Mariia, stressed that each of her daughter's performances helps draw the international community's attention to the situation of Ukrainian children.
According to Mariia, peace is what Ukrainian children need most today.
She also believes that sport played a key role in her daughter's recovery.
Oleksandra now trains for three to four hours a day, five days a week. She dreams of one day representing Ukraine at the Paralympic Games if rhythmic gymnastics is added to the competition program.
The girl inspires many people with her resilience and zest for life. Her participation in tournaments has become vivid proof of her incredible strength of spirit.
