Eco-solutions: European Maritime Safety Agency provides new equipment to strengthen Ukrainian ports against environmental fallout from attacks

Attacks on port infrastructure can cause pollution in port waters, requiring a rapid response to minimize environmental consequences and maintain the stable operation of seaports.

To effectively address such incidents, ports need specialized equipment to contain and eliminate pollution quickly.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has provided Ukrainian ports with a new batch of specialized equipment to respond to pollution in port waters.

The delivered batch includes:

The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority said the equipment is designed to eliminate the consequences of water pollution quickly.

The equipment has already been transferred to the port of Chornomorsk. At the same time, other Ukrainian ports can use it if necessary.

The technical equipment will be used to clean up pollution in port waters after strikes on port facilities. This response makes it possible to:

Mykola Kravchuk, head of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, stressed that the new equipment will strengthen Ukrainian ports' ability to respond to such incidents and become an important element of the port infrastructure security system.

EMSA's support forms part of Ukraine's systematic cooperation with European partners. It aims to increase the resilience of Ukraine's port industry and strengthen its readiness for new challenges in wartime conditions.

Background

On March 23, 2023, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority and the European Maritime Safety Agency signed an agreement under the project "Maritime Safety, Security and Marine Environmental Protection in the Black and Caspian Sea Regions" (BCSEA II) on the free transfer of specialized equipment for cleaning up pollution in seaport waters.

As a reminder, on the morning of Monday, April 14, Russian troops struck port infrastructure in the Odesa region for the second time, hitting a civilian vessel flying the flag of Liberia.

It should also be recalled that on the night of April 14, a Russian strike damaged a civilian vessel flying the flag of Panama and port infrastructure in the city of Izmail.

As reported earlier, after a Russian attack on the Odesa region on April 26, a sunflower oil spill was recorded in the waters of the Chornomorsk port.

It is worth mentioning that Rubryka spoke with experts about the consequences of the oil spill at sea caused by a Russian strike, how the situation resembles an oil spill, and why it is important not only to rescue birds but also to document those that could not survive in such conditions.
