Poland Receives Preliminary US Approval to Produce Missiles for Patriot Systems
Poland has received preliminary approval from the United States Department of State to manufacture missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
This was announced by Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk, UATV English reports citing RMF24.
The missiles are planned to be produced at enterprises within Poland’s defense industry.
“From a military point of view, this would become an important capability for us,” Tomczyk said.
“Poland purchases a large amount of equipment abroad and wants the production of components and related maintenance services to be located on the Vistula,” he added.
Efforts aimed at enabling Poland to domestically produce missiles for Patriot systems have been ongoing for a long time. Washington had most likely been unwilling to share such unique capabilities, but the situation may now be changing.
Current production of PAC-3 MSE missiles — the newest version, which according to unofficial reports cited by Defence24 Poland would manufacture — stands at around 700 units per year. The United States aims to increase this figure to 2,000 by the end of 2030.
Recently, American stockpiles have been depleted, particularly because of the war with Iran. Missiles in the modern version were also sent to Ukraine, are being purchased by allies, and the Americans themselves want not only to replenish but also expand their stockpiles. Hence the desire to seek a manufacturing partner.
“At first, the Americans were skeptical about Poles producing PAC-3 missiles for Patriot systems. (…) After our visit [to the US], I believe everything is now open, and we received preliminary approval from the State Department for the production of missiles for Patriot systems. They will be manufactured in the Polish defense industry. This is a consortium matter — we have such capabilities on Polish territory,” Tomczyk said.
Germany is also seeking to secure production of these missiles on its territory.
The Polish army already operates two Patriot batteries and is awaiting six more. The PAC-3 MSE is the newest missile version, though older variants and alternatives from other companies also exist.
According to Tomczyk, the Americans were “very interested” in a scenario under which Poland would produce long-range missiles for HIMARS systems or AGM-114 Hellfire missiles used, among other platforms, in AH-64 Apache helicopters.
Earlier this month, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that he sees no signs that deliveries of Patriot batteries would be delayed because of the war in the Middle East.
In April, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed confidence that Ukraine would eventually jointly produce anti-ballistic systems together with European countries.
