EU not interested in energy deals with Russia

Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has said she sees no desire among member states to conclude energy deals with Russia, even "behind closed doors".

"I've been ... behind those closed doors, when we talk about leaders' meetings, and I don't see this appetite. When we talk to Russia, of course, the most ‌important thing is to first agree what we want to talk to them about.

If we just go back to business as usual, we will have more of this – more wars. We have seen this before, so we have to be very vigilant and not to actually give Russia what they want because their appetite will only grow," Kallas said in an interview with Reuters.

Kallas criticised the US decision to lift sanctions on Russian oil that is already on tankers at sea. Washington explained the move by citing the global rise in oil prices caused by the US and Israeli war against Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has affected oil exports from the region.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is blaming Ukraine for rising oil prices in his country and has urged the European Commission to lift sanctions on Russian energy resources.
