Erdoğan tells Putin partial ceasefire is needed in Ukraine

Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has told Russian leader Vladimir Putin during a meeting in Turkmenistan that at least a partial ceasefire is needed in the war against Ukraine, along with a halt to strikes on energy infrastructure and ports.

As reported by Turkish news agency Anadolu, Erdoğan met with Putin on the sidelines of a high-level international forum being held in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat to mark the International Year of Peace and Trust. The Turkish Communications Directorate said the conversation had focused on efforts to achieve peace in the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye's support for peace efforts. There was a detailed discussion of all the issues, including the freezing of Russian assets by the EU.

Erdoğan noted that efforts aimed at ending the war with a just and lasting peace are of great value, and also expressed confidence that progress can be made in areas that offer practical benefits for both sides.

He also stated that the introduction of a limited ceasefire regime, primarily with regard to energy facilities and ports, could be beneficial.

Erdoğan said that Türkiye is closely following the negotiation process aimed at ending the war and is willing to host talks in any format.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry recently summoned representatives of the Ukrainian and Russian embassies to convey its concerns over a series of attacks on vessels belonging to Russia's shadow fleet in the Black Sea.

Erdoğan has described the attacks as an "alarming escalation".
