How To "transcend" Orban

How To "transcend" Orban328.06.2025, 15:57 2,400 Viktor OrbanThe Hungarian prime minister has an extremely large "appetite".The European Council summit on June 26 was not as positive for Ukraine as the NATO summit the day before. Despite the fact that Kiev was expecting the start of Ukraine's EU accession talks, the 26 EU member states made it clear that the process would not move forward without Hungary. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has previously stated that he opposes Ukraine's integration into the European Union, because in such a case "we would integrate war."The process of blocking Ukraine's European advancement through vetoing joint decisions of the European Union countries apparently continues. This is the political position of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has long - frankly and openly - made no secret of the fact that he has taken the issue of anti-Ukrainian hysteria and anti-Ukrainian policies as the basis of his next election campaign. So far, Viktor Orbán has won the Hungarian elections several times on criticism of George Soros and his Open Society Foundation. And now that George Soros is already, so to speak, retired, he needs another enemy. And he has chosen Ukraine to mobilize his electorate with the help of anti-Ukrainian rhetoric (and openly pro-Russian actions). So we should expect Orban to do so until the elections in Hungary next spring.I repeat: Viktor Orban's electoral strategy is Ukrainophobia. I think no one can influence him to change this strategy. Because for him it is a matter of political survival. In case he loses the election, we may have a window of opportunity.Because his political opponent Peter Magyar has a position opposite to Orban's. But until then, according to the current EU decision-making rules regarding the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU and the opening of negotiating clusters, the process will be blocked. The European Union may not wait for this, however, and look for workarounds to make decisions and solve problems without the participation of Viktor Orban (or anyone else). The Lisbon Treaty (the basic agreement on the principles of EU functioning) stipulates that every technical decision - to start negotiations or to close them - now requires a unanimous vote of all 27 member states. But this makes the procedure very complicated and is not justified at all. After all, the final decision must be supported by the parliaments of the EU member states anyway. That is why the EU may well change the rules at the technical level - without amending the Lisbon Treaty. And start moving with Ukraine in terms of technical negotiations without waiting for a change of power in Budapest. At the same time, we cannot exclude that the problems that now exist with Hungary may later arise in other EU countries: elections will be held there too and there will be a change of power too. Thus, any problematic issue in the European Union can be dragged out indefinitely...... The EU "fed" Viktor Orban for a long time and he liked it. Now the appetite is extremely large (and only with the financial has become already political). However, if all other EU member states prefer to bypass Orban, they will bypass him. And he himself will not be able to do anything. So the question is only in the political decision and willpower of the EU leaders.Vladimir Gorbach, Ukrainian political scientist, "Unian"PATREONSupport the website Write your comment 3 You can support the website Charter97.orgMULTI-CURRENCY ACCOUNT FOR ASSISTANCE:Bank's name: Bank Millennium S.A.Address: ul.
