Crimped Hair Got a Sleek Makeover at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2027
Lacy Redway must have opened a time capsule from 40 years ago and pulled out a still-working crimper, because the lead hairstylist on Christian Siriano’s spring/summer 2027 show has fully reimagined what this distinctly dented texture could look like for a modern runway. The result, dubbed the “enchanted crimp,” is part sleek, part ridged, and considerably more sophisticated than the crimped looks we’ve seen cycling through the beauty-trend pipeline before.
The key: Most of the hair isn’t crimped. “Once the hair is flat-ironed, we use a crimper to create these ridges along the hair,” Redway tells Allure of the middle-parted style. “And depending on how long your hair is, you might have different sections, but they're all going horizontally across the hair.” So, on the models, those sections appear almost like bands of pronounced, corrugated texture laid across otherwise perfectly straight sheets of hair, tucked cleanly behind the ears.
The two-texture effect and deliberate lack of volume are what separate the enchanted crimp from the fluffy, fully crimped looks that come to mind when you think of how crimpers were used in the ’80s. Instead of making crimping the entire hairstyle, this technique treats it almost like an accessory. The smoothness remains the dominant texture, while the ridges provide little flashes of dimension whenever the hair moves.
There’s also considerable emphasis on shine. Hair was prepped with Tresemmé A-List Collection All-In-One Style Primer and Extra Hold Mousse, then blow-dried smooth using both flat and round brushes. Redway selectively applied hairspray before crimping. She then brushed Bonding Oil through the hair to give it the glossy finish that so beautifully complemented Siriano’s ethereal ensembles.
Although Redway doesn’t necessarily expect people to try to precisely copy the look in everyday life, she’s confident that this show will spark simpler translations. “I think we might see girls doing it like how you’d put a barrette in your hair, like just doing a crimp on each side of their head.”
The enchanted crimp isn't about fully resurrecting an old-school style. It's about letting a little texture wander into an otherwise very polished look—and knowing when you’ve hit your crimping quota.
