Russian Army’s Tactic Of Encircling Settlements From The Flanks And Rear No Longer Works — Malomuzh On The Situation In Donetsk Region
The number of Russian attacks in key directions in Donetsk region — Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka — has significantly decreased in recent days. Whereas the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine previously recorded 20-30 or more combat clashes daily, it now records fewer than 20. The situation is the same in the Huliaipole direction (Zaporizhzhia region). General of the Army of Ukraine, former head of Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service (2005-2010), Mykola Malomuzh, analyzed the situation along the line of combat contact on FREEДOM TV channel, UATV English relays.
He noted that, due to heavy losses in hot sections of the front, the enemy has been forced to regroup. Its tactic of encircling settlements from the flanks and rear no longer works, nor does infiltrating towns and villages with small assault groups.
“That’s how it used to be. Using this tactic, they surrounded Avdiivka, for example, from different sides, forcing our garrison to withdraw while preserving its manpower,” Malomuzh recalled.
According to him, the Russians had also planned to operate this way in the Pokrovsk direction, preparing an operation to encircle Kramatorsk and lay siege to it.
“The exact same operation was planned for Lyman. We saw it. Moreover, Putin had already announced they had surrounded our troops and were about to take 5,000 prisoners from our grouping. We treated this as a critical situation and moved to action: having lulled the enemy, we prepared a systematic operation — asymmetric, which the enemy doesn’t like,” the guest said.
He described the actions Ukrainian defenders took in preparing for the operation in the Lyman direction. In particular, deep reconnaissance was conducted, and strikes were delivered against the enemy’s rear, its unmanned systems, and the airfields where the aviation that launches guided bombs at Ukrainian positions is based.
“We struck their flanks and rear, even entering difficult natural terrain — swamps, forests. The four stages of Operation ‘Vivaldi’ showed how to act when the enemy is preparing a new operation and we’re preparing a counteroperation, diverting their attention onto our strike groups. They think our main defense forces are there, while we’re preparing our main strike forces on their flanks and rear. As it turned out, we gradually began clearing and destroying them, taking them prisoner. And, of course, we also destroyed their headquarters, their command system, and their drone control system,” Malomuzh explained.
In his view, the tactic Defense Forces used in the Lyman direction will also be applied in other sectors of the front.
