Trump Makes Final Decision To Grant Ukraine Licenses For Patriot Missile Production — Zelenskyy
U.S. President Donald Trump has made a final decision to grant Ukraine licenses to produce missiles for Patriot air defense systems, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on September 25, UATV English reports.
“There are specific agreements. At our latest meeting, President Trump emphasized: ‘Yes, I have made the final decision — Ukraine will receive licenses to produce Patriot missiles,’” Zelenskyy told journalists.
The statement follows a meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump in New York during the UN General Assembly. Earlier, after that meeting, Zelenskyy said Trump was positive about the idea but had not publicly confirmed that a final decision had been made.
Ukraine has been seeking permission to establish domestic production of Patriot interceptors as it faces shortages of missiles capable of countering Russian ballistic threats. Zelenskyy has said that Ukrainian authorities have already held talks with RTX, the U.S. manufacturer of Patriot systems, which has indicated its readiness to cooperate.
The Ukrainian president previously estimated that establishing production could take about one to one and a half years. He has stressed that domestic production is important for Ukraine’s long-term air defense capabilities, even as Kyiv works with European partners on its own anti-ballistic system.
The announcement also comes after a period of uncertainty over the U.S. position. On September 23, a State Department spokesperson said Washington had not yet made a final decision and that discussions were continuing. Zelenskyy’s latest statement indicates that, according to the Ukrainian president, Trump has now made the decision to approve the licenses.
Separately, Zelenskyy has said Ukraine is seeking additional Patriot missiles from partners to address its immediate air defense needs ahead of winter.
