NATO fighter jets shoot down drone that entered Latvian airspace after an overnight air alert
On the morning of August 14, Latvia's Armed Forces announced that NATO fighter jets on patrol had successfully shot down a drone that violated the country's airspace and ended up in Latvia as a result of Russian electronic warfare. Accordingly, officials believe the drone may have been Ukrainian.
The air alert previously declared in five districts of the country was lifted at 4:50 a.m.
"The threat in our airspace has ended. Allied fighter jets successfully shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle," the Armed Forces said.
The aircraft was shot down over Balvi municipality in the country's northeast.
A spokesperson for the Joint Headquarters of Latvia's Armed Forces told Latvian Radio that the location of the drone's wreckage is known but will not be disclosed for now. Relevant services are working at the site. According to her, the aircraft was shot down at high altitude, so that the debris may have scattered over a large area.
Authorities asked citizens to call 112 if they find anything suspicious.
An orange alert was also declared in four municipalities of the country. At the same time, Finland temporarily restricted air and sea traffic in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland.
Official comments have not yet addressed the drone's likely origin. However, Ukrainian drones again attacked Russia's Ust-Luga port near St. Petersburg overnight, and the shortest route to it passes near the eastern borders of Latvia and Estonia.
