Russia No Longer Achieving Breakthroughs Along Front Line, ISW Says
Russian forces continue offensive operations across several sectors of the front but are no longer achieving operational breakthroughs, according to the latest assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), UATV English reports.
The think tank said the Kremlin has spent several years adapting its military for positional warfare rather than maneuver operations. However, Ukraine’s defensive efforts have significantly slowed Russia’s advances in 2026 compared with previous years.
According to ISW, Russian forces launched several mechanized assaults against Ukrainian positions in isolated sectors of the battlefield throughout July, but none of those attacks resulted in meaningful territorial gains.
“There are no indications that Russian forces will be able to significantly accelerate their rate of advance or restore maneuver warfare on the battlefield at this stage,” the report states.
ISW also rejected claims by Russian military bloggers that Russian troops had captured several settlements, including Torske and other areas near Kostiantynivka, saying there is no confirmed evidence supporting those assertions.
The report noted that Ukrainian forces conducted counterattacks near Dobropillia, Shevchenko, and Myrne, helping contain Russian offensive operations and prevent further advances.
ISW also highlighted Ukraine’s continued success in striking Russian military infrastructure behind the front line, describing long-range attacks as an important factor complicating Russia’s offensive efforts.
In northern Kharkiv region and along the Velykyi Burluk direction, Russian troops continued offensive actions aimed at pushing Ukrainian forces farther from the international border, creating a so-called buffer zone near Russia’s Belgorod region, and moving closer to Kharkiv.
Despite those efforts, ISW said Russian forces achieved no confirmed territorial advances in the area.
The assessment comes as Russia continues localized attacks across multiple sectors of the front while struggling to translate manpower and equipment advantages into operational gains.
