Trump remains undecided on allowing Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles – Financial Times
The US president explained his position as follows:
The remarks came just two days after Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi at the White House. After the talks, Zelenskyi described the meeting as "good" and said the sides had discussed "the production of Patriot interceptors and several other ideas."
At the same time, in early July, during a NATO summit in Türkiye, Trump said Washington would grant Kyiv a license to produce Patriot missiles.
Financial Times emphasized that the Patriot air defense system plays a crucial role in Ukraine's ability to intercept Russian ballistic missiles targeting Kyiv and other cities.
Trump also told Financial Times that his main focus now is ending Russia's war against Ukraine. He added that his two envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, would visit Ukraine for the first time in the coming days.
Background
On July 9, Zelenskyi said Ukraine would receive a new aid package from the United States in the coming days, including additional PAC-3 missiles for Patriot systems.
On July 13, speaking in Paris at a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, the Ukrainian leader confirmed that he and President Trump had reached an important agreement on licenses to produce Patriot systems. According to him, the agreement is historic.
On July 22, Volodymyr Zelenskyi said Ukraine and the United States had already begun discussing joint production of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
In addition, on July 29, Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that during talks with Donald Trump, the sides discussed granting Ukraine a license to produce interceptors for Patriot systems and stepping up the diplomatic process.
It is also worth noting that during his visit to the United States, Zelenskyi met with representatives of the defense company Lockheed Martin, which produces ATACMS missiles, HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems, F-16 fighter jets, and Patriot air defense missiles.
