Lviv surgeons perform fetal surgery at 16 weeks to save pregnancy

Doctors said the woman had been under the center's care when an ultrasound revealed a serious urinary tract defect in the fetus that posed a life-threatening risk.

According to the medical team, surgery before birth was the only way to save the pregnancy. The situation required urgent intervention because the amount of amniotic fluid had dropped to a critically low level.

The surgery was performed by Halyna Kurylo, a pediatric surgeon at the Lviv Regional Clinical Perinatal Center, together with Professor Przemysław Kosiński.

The patient remains under the care of a multidisciplinary medical team and will continue to be monitored until delivery. After birth, the child will undergo further treatment for the congenital condition.

The center said cases like this highlight the growth of fetal surgery and the expanding ability to treat serious conditions before a child is born.

As previously reported, surgeons at the Chernihiv Regional Hospital performed a complex reconstructive operation to rebuild a patient's trachea and larynx after thyroid cancer. The procedure was necessary because of severe complications caused by the disease and previous treatment.

Lviv's children's hospital also recently performed its first-ever child-to-child heart transplant. Twelve-year-old Nazar Mazur from the Vinnytsia region received the heart of a 10-year-old girl who died in a traffic accident. Doctors say he is already recovering well.
