United to win: Ukrainian diaspora in New Jersey hosts international discussion and raises funds for Ukraine amid war and environmental crisis

Organizers raised more than 10,000 US dollars during the event to support environmental initiatives in Ukraine.

"This event brought together an international audience, creating a space for learning and understanding the environmental challenges Ukraine faces," Shemuda said.

Around 100 participants from several countries joined the webinar.

The format combined academic presentations with artistic elements, offering a comprehensive view of the war's impact on Ukraine's environment and society.

During discussions, speakers focused on major ecological issues, including the destruction of the Kakhovka dam and its far-reaching consequences.

Participants also discussed evacuating and protecting animals from frontline territories.

Speakers drew on research and field experience to explain the mechanisms by which hostilities are destroying ecosystems, and how these changes are affecting people's lives.

Organizers emphasized the importance of environmental restoration, addressing eco-crimes, and assessing the long-term consequences of war for nature.

The event concluded with a poetry reading, which, according to the organizers, "captured the fragility of the bond between people and nature and reinforced the central message of the event."

The over 10,000 US dollars raised will go to supporting organizations and projects working in Ukraine, including:

"By blending analytical data with emotional storytelling, Nature in Danger underscored the importance of collective responsibility and action. The event not only informed participants but also strengthened a shared commitment to preserving the natural environment for future generations," the organizers summarized.

Participants were also invited to join a charity auction featuring a work by Ukrainian artist Lidiia Bodnar-Balahutrak.

Background

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Russian occupiers have completely destroyed over 60,000 hectares of forests in the occupied territories — damage worth at least 14 billion hryvnias.

Efforts are also ongoing, with the support of the EU and the international community, to create a special tribunal to hold Russia accountable for its crime of aggression against Ukraine. Bringing justice, prosecuting the aggressor for crimes in Ukraine, combating ecocide, and restoring the environment are outlined in points 7 and 8 of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi's Peace Formula.
