Zendaya's “Something Blue Hair and Makeup Has Me Under Its Spell

In her new A24 film The Drama, Zendaya plays a bride-to-be with a big secret. On the red carpet, she and her team leaned into the bridal vibes of the movie—and speculation that she tied the knot with longtime love Tom Holland—with a cheeky “something old, something new, something borrowed” theme. We'd been waiting for her interpretation of “something blue,” and it certainly did not disappoint.

For the New York premiere of the movie, which co-stars Robert Pattinson as her betrothed, Zendaya ditched bridal white in favor of a dramatic, feathered Schiaparelli mermaid gown and equally bold beauty details that made her look like an enchanted sea siren come to life, or a bird of paradise caught in a summer rain.

“The dress was so elegant and we didn’t want to do something predictable, so we went with the total opposite: sleek. Wet-ish. Almost edgy but not quite. Like when a bird gets caught in the rain," explained Zendaya's go-to hairstylist Ursula Stephen. To sculpt the style on Zendaya's new bixie, Stephen applied Moroccanoil's Molding Cream, using a paddle brush to evenly distribute the product throughout her hair, then used a wide-tooth comb to shape and add texture. After applying hairspray, Stephen used Moroccanoil Treatment Hair Oil Mist for the “super shiny wet look” effect. “That's the trick!” she says.

Makeup artist Ernesto Casillas carried the blue theme through to Zendaya's eye makeup, matching the multicolored, ombré shades of blue feathers on her gown with shimmery, almost-metallic hues on her eyes. The deepest blue color was concentrated at the outer corners, blended out in a sapphire blue wing. A similar shade was applied to her inner corners for maximum color impact, and a soft mix of blue and gray defined her lower lashline. For the symphony of blue eye shadow, Casillas used Danessa Myricks's Lightwork VII Palette, which is currently out of stock, finishing with lots of mascara and bronze tones on her lips and cheeks. To finish, he applied Dezi Skin's Body Gloss to her limbs to for a delicate, reflective sheen.

We may be nearing the end of the The Drama press run, but that doesn't mean an end to Zendaya's always-incredible red carpet looks. The much-anticipated season three premiere of Euphoria is up next, and we'll see her in the third installment of Dune, a new Spider-Man movie, and the upcoming film version of The Odyssey. Better make space on your beauty moodboard!
