Zelenskyi visits Spain as Madrid pledges €437 mln in military aid

Zelenskyi shared details about the meeting on social media, and the Office of the President released a statement, Rubryka reports.

The Ukrainian president thanked Spain for its consistent support and assistance throughout Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.

He also expressed condolences over the deadly train disaster in Spain's Toledo region, which claimed dozens of lives.

"I spoke at length with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez about Russia's attacks. Russia kills our people every day, and Ukrainians know how painful every loss of life is," Zelenskyi said.

Sánchez announced a new 437 million euro military aid package for Ukraine. The two leaders discussed what it would include and Ukraine's most urgent defense needs.

Zelenskyi also briefed the Spanish prime minister on Russian attacks on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, including:

He highlighted the extensive damage to Ukraine's railway infrastructure and the constant attacks on its power and water supply systems.

"This year, Russia has damaged more of our locomotives than in all the previous years of this war combined. Our power grid and water supply systems are under constant attack. The situation is difficult, especially in Kyiv, and every form of humanitarian support matters," Zelenskyi said.

The Ukrainian president also met with King Felipe VI of Spain at the Zarzuela Palace, the royal residence.

During the meeting, Zelenskyi offered his condolences to the king and the Spanish people over the train collision in Toledo on October 28. The disaster killed about 70 people and injured more than 100.

He also thanked Spain for all its assistance to Ukraine and singled out King Felipe VI for his personal support.

The leaders also discussed the impact of Russia's daily attacks on Ukrainian cities and communities. Zelenskyi outlined the situation in Ukraine and stressed that the country is working with international partners to strengthen its air defenses.

He said Ukraine hopes Spain will provide additional missiles for its air defense systems.

Another topic of the meeting with King Felipe VI was international efforts to hold Russia accountable for its war against Ukraine.

These efforts include establishing a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine and creating a mechanism to pay reparations.

Zelenskyi arrived in Madrid on November 4 for his official visit to Spain. He said he planned to discuss Ukraine's air defenses, defense cooperation, and joint production with Spanish officials.

Rubryka previously reported that Greece and Spain are being urged to transfer Patriot missiles to Ukraine. The missiles are nearing the end of their service life. The proposal comes amid concerns about large-scale Russian attacks this winter, when Ukraine will need more interceptors for its air defenses.
