Kallas Accuses Lavrov of Spreading Lies at G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas accused Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of spreading false narratives about the war in Ukraine during a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta, according to AFP, UATV English reports.

“He said a lot of lies, a lot of false narratives,” Kallas told the news agency.

European officials also sought to increase pressure on Moscow, including to secure a ceasefire in the Black Sea, a key route for agricultural exports.

A European diplomatic source described Lavrov’s remarks during the meeting as “quite provocative.”

Lavrov also held a brief conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who hosted the gathering. The Russian foreign minister later described the exchange as “decent.”

At a press conference, Lavrov criticized European countries for what he called their “arrogant boycott,” while praising the Trump administration’s willingness to engage with Moscow.

The traditional group photo of G20 foreign ministers was canceled after some European officials objected to appearing alongside Lavrov, an AFP diplomatic source said. A U.S. official said the decision was made to prevent the protocol photo session from becoming a diplomatic distraction.

The meeting in Atlanta is preparing the ground for the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled to take place in Miami in December. Instead of a final declaration, the two-day ministerial talks are expected to conclude with a summary report prepared by the United States.
