Germany's Hesse awards its highest honour to Zelenskyi and the Ukrainian people
Hesse Minister-President Boris Rhein said the medal was awarded to Zelenskyi in recognition of his commitment to Ukraine's territorial integrity, freedom and democracy, as well as the values of the European Union. He also emphasised that the award was a sign of respect for the Ukrainian people.
"At the same time, this award is being presented to the entire Ukrainian people, who under his leadership have been defending not only their country's sovereignty and the lives of their citizens, but also Europe and our European values for almost five years, as victims of Russia's brutal war of aggression, which violates international law," Rhein said.
Rhein is scheduled to present the medal to Zelenskyi on December 1, Hesse's Constitution Day.
"I am very proud to be able to honour President Zelenskyi with the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal for his unprecedented commitment," the Hesse minister-president emphasised.
