Russia Faces Shortage Of Missile Systems To Counter Ukrainian Ballistics — Expert
Ukraine’s developing ballistic program and domestic ballistic missiles capable of striking targets on the aggressor state’s territory could create difficulties for Russia.
Given the limits of its missile defense capacity, Russia won’t be able to protect all strategic targets. “Militarnyi” portal commentator Vadym Kushnikov expressed this view on Ukrainian Radio, UATV English relays.
“In a country as vast in territory as Russia, there’s a certain shortage of S-300 and S-400 missile defense systems. In terms of inventory, the enemy has assets to counter Ukrainian ballistics. However, they’re concentrated primarily around the Moscow region, which leaves other regions of Russia vulnerable to massed and combined attacks by Ukraine’s Defense Forces,” Kushnikov noted.
According to him, Ukraine’s scientific school on rocket-building topics continues to develop. But challenges facing domestic companies and teams need to be taken into account, namely direct Russian strikes on production sites, most of which are located in the east of our country.
Among other challenges, the expert named the production of specific missile weapon components and elements, such as solid-fuel rocket engines and guidance elements. This concerns speeds five times or more the speed of sound, as well as a ballistic flight profile with its own particular features.
“The combination of all these factors is exactly what has formed the tasks our engineers and researchers have been working on all these years, creating the Ukrainian ballistic shield,” Kushnikov emphasized.
At the same time, he noted that the enemy faces a certain shortage of air defense systems, particularly S-400s. This can be established from satellite imagery.
“If we analyze the tactical and technical characteristics, the Russians currently have their most modern S-500 ‘Prometheus’ systems, with 77N6-N and 77N6-N1 interceptor missiles, concentrated in Moscow region. These were, in turn, adapted from the A-135 system, which constitutes one of the main elements of missile defense for the Moscow region of Russia,” the expert added.
He noted that, purely in terms of inventory, the enemy has assets that could serve as a shield against Ukrainian ballistics. However, they’re concentrated in a limited area (mainly around Moscow region), while other regions of Russia remain without adequate coverage and are vulnerable to massed and combined attacks by Ukraine’s Security and Defense Forces.
As previously reported, Russia currently effectively does not use submarines in the Black Sea due to the risks involved in putting to sea and possible maintenance problems.
