Ukraine-Russia prisoner exchange could take place as early as next week — Budanov
According to Budanov, news about the exchange should be expected in the near future. He stressed that the process should take place fairly quickly.
"It should happen very quickly, in the near future. I think, within the week," the head of the Office of the President said.
A journalist clarified whether Budanov meant specifically next week. He replied:
"We hope so."
Thus, the Ukrainian side expects a new major prisoner exchange to take place in the coming days. At the same time, the exact date of the exchange and other details have not been disclosed.
Previous prisoner exchanges between Ukraine and Russia
As a reminder, on August 24, Ukraine returned 10 service members from captivity via Belarus. This was a special stage of the exchange carried out as part of the agreements reached between the sides.
All the released service members had defended Ukraine in the Donetsk direction. Until their return from captivity, they had been considered missing.
Two of the service members had been listed as missing since 2024, while the other eight had been missing since 2025.
On August 19, Ukraine also conducted another prisoner exchange and returned 103 service members from Russian captivity. Those released included soldiers with injuries and serious illnesses.
Also, on June 26, Ukraine and Russia conducted another exchange of prisoners of war. As a result, 160 Ukrainian service members returned home.
In addition to soldiers and sergeants, Ukraine also managed to bring 58 officers home from captivity. According to Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, the released personnel included senior-ranking officers.
