Lviv to host international Japanese-language JLPT exam for the first time, with certificates available

Previously, the exam could only be taken in Kyiv in Ukraine. Its introduction in Lviv became possible through cooperation between Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the Japan Foundation, and the Japan Desk Lviv initiative, which operates under the Lviv City Council's Department of Investment and Projects.

"The arrival of the JLPT in Lviv is an important event for both the city and the university. Until now, Kyiv was the only official exam center. Now, residents of Lviv and western Ukraine will be able to obtain an internationally recognized certificate without having to travel to the capital. This creates more opportunities for education, employment, and cooperation with Japanese companies," said Nazar Bilyk, project coordinator at Japan Desk Lviv.

The exam will be offered at N2, N3, N4, and N5 levels. It will assess Japanese-language skills in several areas:

The exam materials are developed and assessed by the Japan Foundation, while participants will receive their results in January 2027 in the form of an official certificate.

"There has long been a need for such an exam in Lviv. Japanese is studied not only by university students but also by schoolchildren. Thanks to the support of the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation, this opportunity is now available in our city as well," said Oresta Zaburanna, Associate Professor at the Professor Yaroslav Dashkevych Department of Oriental Studies at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Registration for the exam will be open from August 18 to September 8 in person at the Professor Yaroslav Dashkevych Department of Oriental Studies at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (1 Universytetska Street, Room 239), on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The participation fee is UAH 3,500 regardless of the level selected. Due to security requirements and the need to hold the exam in a shelter, the number of places is limited. Around 80 participants will be able to take the exam in Lviv this year.

Background

Japan Desk Lviv was launched in Lviv in July 2025 as a service aimed at developing cooperation between Lviv and Japan. During its first year, the team helped establish the city's first official center for the Japanese-language proficiency exam, developed partnerships in education, culture, tourism, and business, and supported contacts between Japanese companies and Lviv-based businesses. Another area of focus has been cooperation with Japanese partners in innovation and defense technologies.

The next stage in the development of Ukrainian-Japanese economic cooperation will be the Lviv Japan Business Forum, which will take place in Lviv this fall. The forum aims to bring together representatives of businesses, government institutions, and international organizations from Ukraine and Japan to develop new partnerships and investment projects.
