UK PM Starmer announces resignation

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during a special address at Downing Street, has announced that his time in office has come to an end.

Starmer announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party and informed the King of his decision.

"Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country that I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken with His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision," Starmer said in his address.

Starmer said he had asked the Labour Party's National Executive Committee to approve a timetable for a party leadership election, with nominations opening on 9 July.

"In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before parliament returns in September. I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete. And I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power," Starmer said.

On 19 June, the results of the by-election in the Makerfield constituency became known – Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham emerged victorious. This victory paved the way for him to stand as a candidate for the Labour leadership and thus as prime minister in opposition to Starmer.

Starmer said he would take part in any Labour leadership contest.
