Sikorski announces new aid for Ukraine as Poland allocates additional funds for generators

On Friday, November 6, a meeting of foreign ministers from the Council of the Baltic Sea States was held in Warsaw. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also took part in the talks.

Participants discussed:

Summing up the meeting, Sikorski said that "it reaffirmed the unity of the countries in our region in the face of ongoing Russian aggression."

According to him, the participants agreed on a joint statement and stressed the need to increase military and financial assistance to Ukraine.

"We agreed that strengthening military and financial support for Ukraine remains key. We unanimously approved a statement (…) The priority is to support Ukraine in preparing for the coming winter and strengthening the resilience of its energy sector," the Polish foreign minister said.

Sikorski separately announced additional funding to purchase generators.

According to him, Poland "will allocate an additional PLN 8 million to the Energy Community." The funds will be used to purchase generators for Ukraine.

The Polish foreign minister also stressed that Russia must understand the consequences of continuing its war against Ukraine. Further aggression, he said, would lead to ever-greater costs for Russia itself.

Partners' assistance to support Ukraine's energy sector

The Ukraine Energy Support Fund (UESF) was established in spring 2022 in agreement with the European Commission and Ukraine's Ministry of Energy to address the consequences of Russian attacks targeting critical energy infrastructure.

Contributions to the Fund are used to cover the most urgent needs of Ukrainian energy companies, including equipment, spare parts and other technical resources, as well as fuel and services required to restore infrastructure and ensure electricity and heat supplies in Ukraine.

As Rubryka reported, Malta became the 27th partner country to join the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. As of October 28, the Fund had received approximately €2.408 billion in grant contributions from 41 foreign donors representing 27 partner countries and three international organizations.

On October 29, another shipment of humanitarian aid containing energy equipment arrived in Ukraine from Azerbaijan, with a total value of more than $1.47 million.

In addition, more than 253 tonnes of energy equipment delivered from Lithuania were distributed to support Ukraine's energy system in two regions. Meanwhile, 97 tonnes of energy equipment from the Netherlands were transferred from the Ministry of Energy's hub warehouses to the Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
